Modi govt may adopt Musharraf formula | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Dec 31: The Modi Government seems to be in a hurry. It wants to unsettle the settled as early as possible. It is under pressure, it appears. What happened after November 29 only indicates that. The past 30 days witnessed six developments and all indicated the direction in which things moved. On November 30, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with his Pakistani counterpart Mian Nawaz Sharif at Paris for 90 seconds and decided to restart composite dialogue process with Pakistan. Reflecting on the meeting with his Indian counterpart in London the same day, Nawaz Sharif said he didn't go to him; PM Modi came to him and talked about peace talks with him and the talks were very meaningful. The meeting surprised India and Indian think-tanks. Six days later on December 6, Indian National Security Advisor, along with Indian Foreign Secretary, met with Pakistani National Security Advisor and Pakistan Foreign Secretary at Bangkok. They sat for almost four hours and prepared the agenda for talks between the two nations. The agenda of talks included Kashmir, Siachen, Sir Creek, in fact, all the issues Pakistan held very dear. The meeting took place in a hush, hush manner and India came to know about transpired in Thailand only a day later. This meeting surprised all and alarmed many. Earlier, the Indian External affairs Minister had said that the talks, if at all held, will be held either in India or Pakistan. She had completely and resolutely ruled out the possibility of talks between the two nations in any third country. On December 8, the Indian External Affairs Minister again surprised and disturbed the nation. That day, she went to Islamabad. On December 9, she held discussions with Pakistani Prime Minister and his foreign policy advisor. After the talks, she, along with the Pakistani Prime Minister's foreign affairs advisor, declared that India will discuss all the issues with Pakistan, including Kashmir, and the talks process will be uninterrupted. She declared that terror and talks could go hand-in-hand. She didn't utter a word on terrorism in Islamabad. On December 25, Prime Minister Modi surprised the whole world and alarmed many sophisticated Indian think-tanks and foreign affairs experts. From Kabul (Afghanistan) he flew to Lahore (Pakistan) to meet with Mian Nawaz Sharif. He also discussed the bilateral issues with his Pakistani counterpart for 90 to 95 minutes. He returned to India the same day, but till date he has not spoken a word on what transpired during the meeting between the two Prime Ministers. Pakistan, Kashmiri parties and Kashmiri separatists, USA and China hailed the new bonhomie between India and Pakistan. On the contrary, many Indian think tanks questioned the kind of diplomacy PM Modi indulged in. The BJP descrbed his visit as an out-of-box diplomacy. The same day, BJP national general secretary and in-charge Ram Madhav told a foreign news channel Al-Jazeera that the BJP was prepared to "take care of the political demands in Kashmir" subject to the condition that J&K will not be separated from India. In other words, he said that the Modi government was prepared to grant maximum possible autonomy to Kashmir. This precisely is what the Musharraf formula stands for or advocates. The very next day, half a dozen BJP national spokespersons spoke with one voice to defend Ram Madhav. While defending him, they said that Ram Madhav had only said that the borders between India and Pakistan and borders between India and Bangladesh could be thrown open. The Musharraf formula and Kashmiri parties and Kashmiri separatists have been vouching for soft, porous and irrelevant borders and Line of Control since years now. Two more developments took place during the past 30 days. One was the disturbing decision that the talks on scourge of terror will be held only between the national security advisors of both the countries and the talks on other issues, including Kashmir, will be held between the foreign secretaries of the two countries. The other was the report in the Pakistani newspaper Dawn that former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had handed over the "secret files on Kashmir" to PM Modi. The report also said that India and Pakistan could consider the Musharraf plan. All these developments are self-explanatory and cannot be appreciated by the nationalists. The most striking aspect of the whole situation is that even the Congress, which created mess in Kashmir, has rejected the Modi's foreign policy vis-à-vis Pakistan as not good for the national interest. |
