Administration fails to respond benevolence of septuagenarian sports enthusiast | | | Arun Kumar Early Times Report Kathua, Jan 31 : At a time when government is gaga over promoting sports amongst youth for their positive engagement, a benevolent initiative of a septuagenarian to encourage youth to take up sports has been disdained by the unresponsive and indifferent administration in district Kathua. Shiv Nandan Sharma, 70, a retired Physical Education Teacher, has taken initiative to promote Hockey in Kathua and constructed a hockey stadium named after legendary Dhian Chand in 60 kanals land 300 mtrs from National Highway at village Chak Gouta in Kathua, but his repeated pleas to district administration to provide facilities and approach road to the stadium have met apathy and indifference. Highly charged and motivated Sharma visited slum areas of Kathua and urged girls to take up Hockey on regular basis in his stadium, where he provides free equipment and sports gear to them. Many boys and girls who trained in government stadium in Kathua have now switched over to Shiv Nandan's stadium as they did not get any facilities or coaching expertise there. Sharma has been joined by several of his retired colleagues who want to join his initiative and train the young boys and girls who turn up there. Talking to ET, Sharma expressed hope that young boys and girls could do surprisingly well if they were extended some basic facilities. "I have approached the district administration several times, but have got little besides assurances" he regretted. |
