Contractors, workers hold protest against FCI, CAC Ltd demanding dues | | | S Tahir-ul Haq Early Times Report BARAMULLA, Jan 31: Land owners, contractors and labourers working on construction of godown of Food Corporation of India (FCI) here today staged a massive protest demonstration on Sunday against the FCI and their mother contractor Cash and Agro company (CAC) Ltd. Sources said that the protesters this morning took to streets and shouted slogans against the FCI and their mother contractor Cash and Agro Company (CAC). Dozens of workers blocked the main gate of the godown for hours, after which they shouted slogans against the department concerned, sources said. "FCI and their mother contractor CAC are not releasing their pending salaries which is in worth crores, and the amount is pending from past six months," said sources. A local contractor Mohammad Ramzan said that FCI has started the construction work of north Kashmir's biggest food godown to dump the large quantity of food for North Kashmir and they handed over its construction work to cash and Agro Company. The company handed over the work to sub contractors who played a good role for the construction work of godown and almost completed its work, but from last two years the Cash and Agro Company head Nirbay Train has not released the payment of sub contractors and labours which is in worth crores, said a local contractor. A group of contractors said that they have more than 45 lakhs pending to Agro Company and their family is facing lot of problems. They said that they provided labour and mason work to the company but in return the company has not released the payment yet. The protesters threatened that if their payment was not released in few days, which could provoke them to take extreme steps and for that the company will be responsible for the consequences. However a group of farmers said, "FCI has also not released the payment of farmers who provide them their orchard lands. The contractor Nirbay Train has lot of influence in police and other administrative departments. He had threatened contractors that if they will not resume their work, they will hand over the work to other contractors of his choice." |
