Nursery owners-government department nexus comes to fore in Kishtwar | Over 10 lakh trees planted by various departments in dry season | | Asif Iqbal Naik Early Times Report Kishtwar, Feb 3: Nexus between nursery owners and officials has come to fore in this frontier district as over 10 lakh trees were planted by various government department in the district in last few months despite the fact that area has witnessed dry season in absence of rain and snow. Sources informed the "Early Times" that Forest Department Kishtwar, Social Forestry, Soil Conservation Department, IWDP, Horticulture Department, Forest Department Territorial and allied department alone planted trees of various quality including Apple, Walnuts, Far, Kail, Deodar and other fruit bearing plants in Kishtwar district this season. Sources said that under well planned nexus between various nursery owners, the department purchased the trees from them and later distributed these in various areas of the district despite the fact that the season and the dry conditions are not feasible for survival of these plants. Sources said that various officials through a chain nexus got commissioned worth lakhs of rupees which are known to everyone in the departments involved in such practice. "The best season for plantation is after rainfall when the top layer of the earth is soft, beside there is also required an optimum temperature along with full moisture condition land and the ongoing season did not fulfill the same" said an expert. The sources added that in addition to plantation of over 10 lakh plants, NHPC Kishtwar also supplied over 12 lakh plants to various department following which the District Development Board asked DC Kishtwar to ascertain whether the plants really exists on ground. The sources also did not rule out double drawl of payments in terms of plants supplied by the NHPC and plants purchased by various departments in Kishtwar district during this year off season which also needs to be probed. The sources said that there is immediate need to stop the purchase of fresh lot of plants till the weather will be improved and fit for the plantation.
