Night temp up again, day becomes cold in Kashmir | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Mar 13: The Sun was today playing hide and seek in the Kashmir valley, where night temperature surged again though day remained cold due to snowfall on upper reaches and rain in plains, including summer capital, Srinagar. A Met department spokesman said here this afternoon that scattered rain could occur in the valley and Jammu region and isolated rains in Ladakh region during the next 24 hours. He said a fresh Western Disturbance (WD) is again approaching the region which could hit again on March 17 and will remain active till March 19. After a long dry spell and above normal temperature which presented a Spring like weather conditions even during major parts of the winter, the weather turned wet during the past few days when upper reaches experienced fresh snowfall and plains had moderate rain. Because of the change in the weather, maximum temperature recorded five to eight degree drop and for the first time in several months it was three to five degrees below normal at almost all places in the valley. However, the minimum temperature remained above normal, the spokesman said. The world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, 55 km from here in north Kashmir, recorded fresh snowfall though the minimum temperature remained unchanged at minus 1.5 degree, still 1.5 degree above normal. The maximum temperature at the resort yesterdays was 1.6 degree, more than three notches below normal. At Pahalgam, base camp of holy Amarnath cave shrine in south Kashmir Himalayas, where the annual pilgrimage is to commence from June, recorded eight degree maximum temperature yesterday, three notches below normal. However, the minimum temperature was 2.5 degree, 3.5 degree above normal. Qazigund, Kokernag and Kupwara also recorded drop in the maximum temperature while the minimum temperature was above normal. Though majority roads in the summer capital, Srinagar, were under water because of faulty drainage system and continuous rain, the minimum temperature witnessed surge again. Against yesterdays 4.4 degree night temperature, it was 5.7 degree, about two notches above normal. However, the maximum temperature was 11.8 degree yesterday which was more than three notches below normal. The Spokesman said there could be light rain or thundershowers and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 14 degree, a notch below normal and 5 degree, two degree above normal respectively during the next 24 hours in the city. |
