Forest deptt officials 'facilitating' cutting of nursery in North Kashmir | | | S Tahir-ul Haq Early Times Report BARAMULLA, Mar 13: Despite tall claims of beautification and stoppage of deforestation of nurseries in this district of North Kashmir, locals allege that the concerned department has told them to axe the nurseries for fencing which is completely illegal in nature. Sources said that hundreds of trees were axed today in compartment number 70 of forest nursery in Sangri area. Hundreds of trees have been damaged by some locals in connivance with higher authorities of the forest department after they were told to axe the trees for fencing purpose in Gujjar Sangri area, sources told early times. "The nurseries were used for various purposes like the rural populaces were feeding their cattle's in excess of the nursery' due to which the beautification of the area was maintained to the extent," said sources. A local resident of Gujjar Sangri Abdul Qayoom said that on the directions of forester Mushtaq Ahmad Khan people axed hundreds of trees from this nursery. He said that the forester told them that since they need fencing posts the people can axe the trees even though the whole process is completely illegal. "The level of deforestation is unexpected since people are cutting trees in broad day light and load them in trucks and ferry it to other places. This will not be tolerated at all," said another local resident namely Ashiq Ahmad. He alleged that from past 12 years the locals had saved this nursery from felling down. He alleged that the labourers involved in cutting of trees are hand in glove with the forest department. "Every day it is heard that government is taking tough steps in saving the forests but nothing is visible on the ground. Forest employees are being paid for the protection of green gold but instead they loot it and earn money from the mafia," said Ashiq. "There are reports that the demarcation has been made in nursery for some construction work. This will not only allow the wild animals to roam freely but will put the lives of common masses at risk," said a group of locals. For all this illegal work, the concerned department should be held responsible as corruption has rotten the system, and everybody has been given a liberty to destroy these forests. It was their duty to plant more trees and plants here in all nurseries, said locals. In the meantime, a video journalist of Munsif TV namely Irshad Ahmad Bhat was attacked by goons while he was on professional duty to highlight the issue. |
