India's 1000th wi-fi hotspot set up at Vaishno Devi | | | Agencies
New Delhi, Mar 17: The famous Vaishno Devi Shrine in Jammu and Kashmir today became the 1000th wi-fi hot spot in India with the launch of the facility by Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad. Speaking on the occasion, Prasad said it was part of the Government's initiative to modernize the public sector telecom services provider BSNL so as to make it relevant in the telecom sector's competitive environment. BSNL plans to invest Rs. 2000 crore for upgradation of its network which includes adding another 21000 BTS. The addition would include 13000 BTS which would be used for its 3G services. As part of its drive to tap new sources of revenue while meeting aspirations of the Government, BSNL has introduced a plan to deploy public wi-fi hotspots across the country covering all religious, tourist and other important locations.In the first phase, it is proposed to set up 2500 wi-fi hotspots across the country. |
