Manpower shortage hits Fire Service deptt | Selection list withheld since 2014 | | Saqib Junaid Early Times Report srinagar, June 29: Despite witnessing a surge in the number of fire incidents across the state, 1700 sanctioned posts are lying vacant in the Fire and Emergency Services (F&ES) Department thereby affecting the fire control and other emergency operations across the state. Official sources said that the department at present has shortage of about 50 percent of sanctioned strength for man power. The department has a sanctioned strength of about 3600 posts of which almost 1700 posts are lying vacant. Official sources said that over the years many new stations came up but are not able to function due to paucity of staff. "There are 176 fire stations which are functioning across the state and in most of them only half of the sanctioned staff of 12 has been appointed. There is severe shortage of fire officers at district level," source said. The shortage of manpower, according to sources, is causing tremendous loss of property and lives as the department is unable to do the rescue work properly According to official figures 2418 fire incidents had occurred in Jammu and Kashmiri in 2015 destroying a property of worth Rs 59 crores. The recruitment process that was initiated three year ago has also been halted due to which the problems of manpower crisis are aggregating within the department. Sources said the department had initiated recruitment process earlier but the process was halted due to some unknown reason. Around 1050 posts for firemen, junior assistant and drivers that were advertisement in 2013 are yet to be filled despite all processes attached to it being completed. "In 2014, we underwent through physical and written test but till now no results are being declared. We are suffering the department is leaving all 60,000 youth to suffer who are making rounds to offices of government to get the results declared," a delegation of aspirants told Early Times. The Aspirants claimed that number of the aspirants has crossed the 'over-age' limit and "they are in distress and it's all because of callous approach of administration. While the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir as per the aspirants had shot letter to the concerned department twice in this regard which according to them have not being responded by the Fire and Emergency Services (F&ES) Department. "We went to the office of Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Asgar Hassan Samoon who assured us to solve our problems. He even shot letters to the department but still our matter sees no headway," the delegation said. A senior Official in the Fire and Emergency Services (F&ES) Department claimed of having no information about the recruitment process. "I don't know anything about it. The government is working over it and very soon it will announce any decision in this regard," he said. |
