155 private houses allocated to Govt officers at exorbitant rents | Former legislators, political workers also enjoying luxury at Govt expenditure | | Peerzada Ummer Early Times Report Srinagar, July 8: Lack of norms for allotting private houses as official accommodations to government officers has resulted in unwarranted pinch to the state exchequer, brunt of which is born by the common tax payer. Reports reveal that the government has not formulated any rules for the admissibility of private houses to be allocated to the government officers as official accommodation, which has resulted in the gross violation of rules and draining of the state's exchequer Posh private houses were allotted to no less than 37 officers of the state government that too in accordance with their own choice and without following the tendering process. The rents were fixed at their own will while the money was being paid out of the state exchequer. Reports also inform that these officers were ineligible for such posh accommodations however norms and rules were ignored in the entire process. The document reveals that the government had only invited offers from the interested private owners and what is more ironic is that the rent was fixed by the rent assessment committee. Furthermore, there are as many as 155 private houses hired by the government in Jammu and Srinagar without the receipt of any offers. Also, the houses were selected by the officers themselves that too before hiring process of the government took place. Such a practice has indicated lack of transparency in the hiring process by the government indicating that personal contacts were used by several officers to get the accommodation of their own choice and at their own will. Sources said that though the issue of hiring of the 155 private houses in Srinagar and Jammu without any receipt of offers came to fore but there hasn't been any investigation initiated into it, hence sweeping such a gross violation of rules under the carpet. Sources divulge that the private houses were provided by the government even to those people who weren't at all entitled for such accommodations. It was informed further that the private houses were given by the government even to those people who lost the elections and some of them were even the former legislators. Even political workers were given the prized accommodations by the government here, the rent of which was paid out of the common man's pocket. The cash starved state of Jammu and Kashmir has been, since decades, gasping under the heavy burden continues to remain in a worrisome situation with officer raj pushing it further under the deep crisis. |
