Soz hails Karan Singh for Rajya Sabha statement | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 12: As expected, Karan Singh's August 10 speech in the Rajya Sabha during the debate on Kashmir has evoked very positive response from certain quarters in Kashmir, sections of media included. They have welcomed his intervention. Karan Singh had, among other things, said that J&K only acceded to India and not merged with it; that the accession of the state with India was conditional; that the relations between New Delhi and J&K shall be guided by Article 370; that there was a problem; and that New Delhi had to bite the bullet to resolve Kashmir problem. This precisely had been the line of the so-called mainstream Kashmiri leaders, including Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah, Saif-ud-Din Soz and so on. That Karan Singh's speech will enthuse many in Kashmir and stung many in Jammu was a foregone conclusion. It was expected that people of Jammu will react very strongly against him and those in Kashmir would get thrilled and it happened. In Jammu, hardly anyone approved of his statement, formulations and suggestions. Contrarily, almost all those who reacted rejected his statement outright. They said many things, which must have stung him. On the other hand, as said, Karan Singh speech struck a chord with marginalized and isolated Kashmiri leaders like Saif-ud-Din Soz, former JKPCC chief, former Union Minister and former NC's ideologue and champion of greater autonomy. Soz was impressed by the speech of Karan Singh that he took no time to thank him, saying his advice was relevant as far as Kashmir was concerned. "Let Kashmiris take particular notice of what Dr Karan Singh told the Rajya Sabha. His words to the Rajya Sabha, should matter to Kashmiris. One is that the Kashmir acceded to India with some conditions. The second is that Delhi has the compulsion of biting the bullet to resolve Kashmir. I did offer thanks to Dr Karan Singh as an individual," he was reported as saying. Kashmiri leaders don't appreciate everything and every statement. They are very selective in their approach; they appreciate only those things and those statements which suit Kashmir and promote their separatist and communal cause. That Soz and a section of the Kashmiri commentators hailed Karan Singh should establish that the Congress veteran's speech has given then a handle to raise more hue and cry. |
