PDP-BJP government plays second fiddle to separatists in Kashmir | Fails to inculcate sense of normalization in valley | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Aug 12: The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) coalition government in the state has virtually 'surrendered' to the separatist leadership as the normal life continues to be paralyzed across Kashmir even on 35thday today. Significantly, the people at helm have failed to take any step so far that would have given a sense of normalization in the valley. At the same time no serious effort is being made to ensure that peace returns to the valley. The state government is totally dependent on Jammu & Kashmir Police and security forces agencies in this regard. Around three weeks back Minister for Education, Naeem Akhtar announced that all the government and private schools would reopen in Kashmir after remaining closed for the summer vacations. However, as on date the schools continue to remain closed. As such the education of children has been affected and many of them could be seen doing activities which their parents would not like in normal course of action. The state government seems to be totally dependent on imposition of curfew and restrictions in order to bring the situation under control. They are devoid of any other step or method in order to bring the current crisis to end. The common masses have been 'crushed' beyond limit and there is nobody who would apply balm to their wounds. The PDP-BJP coalition government is adopting a wait and watch policy with regard to the current situation in the Kashmir valley. The state government is not ready to take any pro-active measure to bring the situation under control. No Confidence Building Measure (CBM) has been taken to inculcate a sense of belonging among the people of valley. The functioning of the government is limited to Civil Secretariat here since the same is located in highly fortified area. All the other government offices are almost closed with very few heads of the various departments turning up to attend to their offices. All the important service matters in the government offices have been relegated to the back-burner and there is nobody who would come to relief of the common man. Same holds true with the banks operating in the valley. With reports that more forces are being sent to the valley there are chances that people of valley are all set to face harshest restrictions in the coming days. There seems to be no end to the miseries of the people with army already carrying out flag marches in some of the areas of Kashmir. The law & order situation is the prime concern for the people at helm with development projects being relegated to second tier. The Jammu & Kashmir government has its eyes glued towards New Delhi and they are expecting some breakthrough from the Government of India. On the other side, New Delhi seems to be in no mood to give leverage to the separatists and as such the situation continues to be grim across the Kashmir valley. In such a scenario the people of valley are keeping their fingers crossed vis-à-vis the situation that is likely to emerge in the coming days and weeks. |
