Education Minister's latest 'salvo' to open schools fails to enthuse masses in valley | | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Aug 19: After maintaining silence for a month the Minister for Education, Naeem Akhtar is once again in news with regard to the reopening of the schools in the valley and this time too he is in news for wrong reasons. The education minister has sought the cooperation from the parents in making the schools functional in the Kashmir as they are closed since July 1. Akhtar has asked the parents to play a pro-active role in throwing open the schools so that the class work gets started and the education system is back on rails. However, the latest 'salvo' of the education minister has not gone well with the people who say that the state government wants to shed its own responsibility and put the same on the shoulders of the parents. The people say that since the state government has failed to restore normalcy in the valley it has no locus standi to seek cooperation of parents in bringing the education system back on track. "The whole Kashmir valley is on boil since the past 42 days and there is complete anarchy. There are no visible signs of the government and still then the education minister wants the parents to cooperate in the reopening of the schools. This is absurd and the education minister should first understand his responsibility," said Shakeel Ahmad, a parent. Like Shakeel many other people are of the opinion that the state government should make the situation conducive and then think of throwing open the schools in Kashmir. They said that since the situation is volatile the opening of schools is fraught with danger thus putting the lives of the children at risk. "There are many areas in the valley where the curfew is in force. There are many others where restrictions are in place and in the rest there is strike. Given such a situation only a mad would allow his child to go to school. The education minister seems to be living in a world of his own and that is why he is issuing illogical statements from time to time," said Mushtaq Ahmad, a parent. It would be in place to mention here that the educational institutions of Kashmir got closed on July 1 in connection with the summer vacations. The educational institutions could not reopen on July 17 since the Kashmir valley was rocked by anti-government protests following the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen Commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani. Despite the announcement of education minister that the educational institutions would reopen on July 24 nothing of that sort happened with schools continuing to remain closed. Not only the students and their parents are mocking the latest government announcement on reopening of schools, teachers too are not enthused to join their duties. The teachers say that since the law & order situation is abnormal in Kashmir the government has no right whatsoever to issue directions to the teachers and students to attend the schools. "Due to the enforcement of curfew and restrictions coupled by strike it is very difficult to reach the schools. The public traffic is off the roads and in such a situation how can a teacher or a student reach the school. The state government should make only such announcements that can be implemented on ground," said Mukhtar Ahmad, a government teacher. |
