Dengue scare: Three dengue cases reported, Health Deptt gears up | | | Early Times report
Jammu, Aug 23: Following three cases of dengue reported for last more than one month from inflow of floating visitors, the Health Department has pulled up socks and has geared up its resources to handle the 'Dengue menace'. According to sources, atleast three persons though local but coming from the outside the state have been tested positive while 66 samples have been taken so far across Jammu during the precautionary cum preventive measures undertaken by the Directorate Heath Jammu. According to data of heath department has so far tested 66 samples across the Jammu Province out of which one has been tested in Jammu and two cases though hailing from Jammu have been detected positive in New Delhi during their visit to national capital who have returned after taking some medical treatment in national capital. "We have taken all measures to tackle with dengue menace while during surveillance the fumigation/spray have been conducted across the 50 adjoining houses of the three person tested positive, said Director Health Service (DHS) Jammu Dr Baljeet Pathania, while adding the department has geared up its resources from top cadre to the basic level i.e. Asha workers to deal with dengue scare and advisories in this regard have issued in this regard. "Besides awareness campaign in village level, the Department has started a mass awareness campaign through electronic/ print media also," he said and added that the do's and don'ts in multilingual (Hindi English and Urdu) format have been published in the local dailies to create public awareness. "To combat the threat, atleast 349 ponds across Jammu region in which 95 in Jammu district so far covered by releasing anti-larva fishes in still water bodies, including conventional ponds, in urban as well as rural areas to prevent the spread of mosquitoes, "he stated. Director Health Dr Pathiana further added that situation is under control and is not alarming as compared to the situation in 2013, when nearly 5880 suspect cases were taken in which 1838 were positive for dengue and 4 deaths were reported. He however assured that officials of the department are taking all necessary measures to prevent the spread of dengue in Jammu. Sharing the preventive measures at personal level, Dr Pathania said the main cause of dengue was stagnant water and the department in engaged to create awareness among the masses to prevent stagnation of water. "The best way to guard against the disease is to make sure there are no containers outside the house such as on a balcony or in a garden where rain water can collect, hygienic surroundings are less likely to breed mosquitoes and so don't let trash like tyres, and coconut shells containing water. "Cover all pots of water, if you do keep potted plants ensure that water does not accumulate in the pot, he added. |
