More Army units deployed in south Kashmir | | | Ishtiyaq Ahmad
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Sept 17: In an effort to counter presence of militants in public rallies and to curb pro-freedom rallies in south Kashmir, two more units of Army have been deployed in south Kashmir districts. Sources in the Army informed Early Times that two more Army units have been deployed in some districts of South Kashmir. "The decision to deploy Army in South Kashmir areas was taken in a meeting between Governor NN Vohra with Northern Army commander followed by the subsequent meeting between Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti in presence of General officer Commanding (GoC) of Srinagar-based 15 Corps Lt General Satish Dua on August 20," sources maintained. Sources said that the Army has also decided to deploy Panthera-T6 armored vehicles in South Kashmir districts to deal with the violent crowds. It is to mention here that that Northern Army commander Lt General D S Hooda had admitted that presence of militants in public rallies in South Kashmir was a cause of concern and that he had directed his men to counter the move by going after the militants. "Our ultimate goal is to ensure peace returns in the entire Kashmir. No doubt South Kashmir has been our primary focus given the fact that South Kashmir has been epicenter of the marches and rallies," top sources in the Army said. A senior army official informed that soldiers will have no direct interference in maintaining law and order. "In anti-militancy operation soldiers will be directly involved. In containing the protests, the soldiers will assist police and paramilitary forces," the Army officer said and added that Army will work in tandem with JK Police. |
