50 percent CHCs in JK san doctors' quarters | | | Bijay Charak
Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 23: While the Health Department is struggling with acute dearth of doctors particularly in remote areas, it is a pity that no government has ever bothered to redress the issue of accommodation for doctors especially in the remote areas as over 50 percent Community Health centres have no residential accommodation for specialist doctors compelling them to stay away from their places of posting. Pleading anonymity a medico informed Early Times that non-availability of accommodation in hospitals for staff takes heavy toll on patients as the senior doctors are not available during emergencies when their services are needed most. Sources further said that on one hand government claims to provide all the basic facilities at Community Health Centre, so that the burden of district and divisional hospitals is reduced but on the other hand, the health department has failed to construct the quarters of doctors and paramedical staff and other basic infrastructure in the such hospital. They further said, "due to insufficient accommodation, majority of doctors and paramedical staff leaves the hospital premises in night and if some serious patient arrives during night hours, he has to be referred to the other hospitals". Due to lack of proper infrastructure and shortage of doctors, such health institutions have become mere referral centers and Health and Medical Education department has been failed to take cognizance of lack of bare minimum infrastructure at CHCs. |
