SVC busy reprimanding deptts; Official 'thugs' plundering state, making merry | | | Syed Junaid Hashmi Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 23: State Vigilance Commission (SVC) claims of working too hard to put an end to the menace of corruption in Jammu and Kashmir but it seems that certain top thugs and cheats are yet to come under its scanner. Those who are still running the transfer industry and those who have already benefitted heavily from this murky business have neither been touched nor have ever been questioned for having turned overnight rich. Though some action was taken against an aide of Ex-Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand but aides and advisors of other ex-ministers who have of late become new VVIPs of Jammu and Kashmir are yet to be questioned. The CVC may have some genuine reasons for not picking up these thugs and questioning them for their acts of omission and commission but it is largely believed that they have connection in the higher echelons of power because of which they are not being touched. The wealth they have accumulated over the years is being questioned by almost every commoner but it is only the CVC that is yet to initiate inquiry against these government employees. An ex-PRO who has returned to his home department has purchased three houses, one in Jammu, another one in Kashmir and one at his native place. Another one has purchased a house worth Rs. 1.5 crore in Bhatindi area of Jammu city. A duplex, the house is located in one of the posh sectors of Bhatindi where houses of several National Conference ministers are. Two middle rung officers have built palatial houses in Sunjawan. Though they claim that they took housing loans for the construction of these houses but a look at the houses gives you a clear proof of how reliable their statements are. Belonging to a lower middle class family, these two officers have served in PHE, PWD and Power development departments in various capacities respectively. The exceptional thing about them is that none of the properties are on their name and instead, the documents bear the name of their parents, this making it difficult for SVC to initiate a probe against them. Another ex-PRO is these days driving SUVs. Eyewitnesses maintain that he has been taking extraordinary precaution in ensuring that he does not come under the scanner of SVC. Neither have their bank accounts swelled nor have they opened any new account in the banks across the state, said the sources. Instead, officials assert that out of these new tycoons, one of has used connections of his in-laws to keep his wealth a top secret. All precautions have been taken to ensure that the wealth earned during the last four months does not catch eyes of the vigilance and crime branch, said the sources. They added that another ex-Personal Assistant has invested huge amount of money in the construction of flats in Bhatindi and Sidhra areas of Jammu city. Sources said that the said PA has made investment in the name of his wife and brother-in-law. They added that the investment has been made in such a way that if ever the state government wakes up and initiates a probe, he would outrightly says that he has nothing to do with this investment and that it is purely his wife and brother-in-law's baby. Since his wife belongs to a business family, sources said that the said ex-PA knows well that it would be tough to catch him. "He has been paying the taxes regularly. Hence, the money has been made through wrongful means but he is playing wise and thus, ensuring that he is never caught and no question is ever asked to him," said another source. Another official who is these days with a cabinet minister has been constructing a palatial house in Bhatindi. Since most of the land in Bhathindi belongs to forest department, the official faced little difficulties in purchasing the said property since the same was not required to be registered. Sources said that the official has also purchased a huge piece of land in Sidhra. They further said that the entire payment for the land was made in cash and that too within a week's time. Sources put the cost of land at Rs. 65 Lakh. An in-depth inquiry into the wealth accumulated by these aides and advisors of ex-ministers would unveil the continued murky business of money exchanging hands in lieu of choice postings. |
