Early Times Report Srinagar, Nov 21: Despite snowfall today, the National Highway connecting Ladakh region with Kashmir, was through for traffic though no night traffic is allowed as a precautionary measure. There was cloudy sky throughout the night, official sources said, adding that this morning snowfall was experienced at world famous tourist resort of Sonmarg on 434-km-long Sriangar-Leh National Highway, the only road linking the Ladakh region with Kashmir. However, the highway is through for both way traffic with some restrictions, a traffic police official told here. A tourist official said that tree and roof tops besides open spaces and roads had turned white due to snowfall, first of the season this winter. However, sky has now become clear after snowfall, he said, adding it has further intensified chill. The upper reaches of Zojilla, Meenmarg and other places also had snowfall since this morning. Traffic police official confirmed that despite snowfall highway was through. However, he said as precautionary measure no night traffic is allowed on the road, which becomes slippery due to below freezing temperature. He said now vehicles, including those carrying essentials for Ladakh region, are being allowed to travel from Sonamarg on this side of the Zojila till 1100 hrs. Later vehicles from Ladakh to Kashmir are being allowed from 1200 hrs to 1800 hrs everyday. He said the decision to close the highway for winter months will be taken by the authorities, keeping in view the condition of the road. |
