Process of J&K integration | Lal Bahadur Shastri in news | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Nov 21: Late Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri has become a subject of positive discussion in the social media these days. The context is J&K and its integration into India and the man who is under severe criticism is none other than first Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru during whose time J&K acceded to India and the nation started facing trouble in the Valley and the process continues even today. Shastri was a great integrationist, the people are saying, and adding that it was during his short regime that J&K was brought closer to New Delhi then ever before. They are right. It was during his regime that the offices of Sadar-e-Riyasat and Wazir-e-Azam were abolished and the offices of Governor and Chief Minister were introduced to bring the state at par with other states of the Union. It happened in 1965, when Ghulam Mohammad Sadiq was the Wazir-e-Azam. Sadiq became the first Chief Minister of J&K. It was only that the offices of the Chief Minister and the Governor were introduced. Even the National Conference was merged with the Congress in the same year. Not only this, after 1965, New Delhi and the state government worked in tandem and brought the state under the ambit of 260 central laws, as also under the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court of India, Election Commission of India and Comptroller and Auditor-General of India. Several other central legislations were applied to the state. It was also after 1965 that the elections to the Lok Sabha were conducted in the state under the supervision of the Election Commission of India and not conducted by the state election commission. This happened in 1967. People are also accusing late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Their grouse against her is that she brought down the Congress party's government in J&K in February 1975 and brought back to power the same Sheikh Abdullah whom her father had put under arrest and dethroned on the charge of sedition. They are saying ever since the reemergence of the National Conference in 1975, the state has been witnessing one trouble after another. The fact of the matter is that Shastri did great service to the nation by bringing the state closer to India and Indira Gandhi and other Congress leaders who headed the Congress party and the central government undid all that Shastri did. Indeed, time has come to start from where Shastri left. |
