Orders keeping schools open in Kashmir during winter | Education Minister continues to build castles in air | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Nov 21: Minister for Education, Naeem Akhtar has a habit of building castles in air without knowing the realities on the ground. Same has been depicted in a latest directive (farmaan) issued by the department headed by Akhtar. Over the past few days enough hints have come to the fore that the education department is contemplating to keep the government as well as private schools in Kashmir valley open during the winter this year. This is despite the fact that the facilities at the government schools in the valley are poor and the same are not upto mark at private schools as well. Most of the government schools in Kashmir don't have window panes. There are many others where there is no proper seating arrangement. Children have to sit on worn out cots in freezing temperature while receiving education. Given this fact how can one think of keeping the schools open during winter in Kashmir. "Winter vacations are an important component of academics in Kashmir valley. The facilities in private schools are not upto the standard and as far as government schools are concerned there are absolutely no facilities whatsoever. In the absence of proper seating and heating arrangements only an insane can think of keeping schools open during winter in Kashmir," said Mukhtar Ahmad, a parent. Director School Education Kashmir, Aijaz Ahmad Bhat has already voiced his concern over the improper heating arrangements in the government schools. The Director issued an order and asked the heads of schools to make their position clear vis-a-vis improper heating arrangements in the schools. "When the Director School Education himself is not happy with heating arrangements in schools how does he or the education minister think that they would be able to keep the schools open during winter in Kashmir. This is highly impossible and such things are possible only when each and every thing is in place," said Mohammad Younis, a parent. Since the education department has already announced for mass promotion of students one fails to understand the logic behind of keeping the schools open during winter. The new academic session has already started and there is no fun of putting students to trouble during winter by keeping their schools open. "The students have to appear in the examination in June 2017 and as such there is no urgency for the people at helm to think of a decision that is highly impracticable. The education department can easily do away with the summer vacation but cancelling winter vacation is totally absurd and it cannot be thought of," said Manzoor Ahmad, a retired teacher. It would be in place to mention here that education minister faced flak when he announced reopening of schools during unrest in Kashmir despite the fact that most parts of valley were under curfew. The announcement turned out to be a mere lip exercise since very few schools reopened with attendance of students and teachers being very thin. The parents accused Akhtar of putting the children to risk by asking them to attend school in a highly volatile situation. |
