Upper reaches experience snowfall, cloudy sky in plains in Kashmir | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Nov 21: Upper reaches in the Kashmir valley experienced snowfall while plains had cloudy sky resulting in severe chill during the day though the night temperature has witnessed further improvement. The MeT department spokesman said here this afternoon that there could be scattered rain or snow today followed by rain or snow during the next 48 hours in the Jammu and Kashmir. All trees electric poles and roof tops had turned white after snowfall today at Sonmarg, about 100 km from here in central Kashmir district of Ganderbal on Srinagar-Leh national highway, which was however, through for traffic. The upper reaches, including at Zojila, Meenmarg and other places light to moderate snowfall was recorded. Baltal, base camp of holy Amarnath cave shrine also experienced snowfall today. However, moderate to heavy snowfall was experienced at holy cave and its periphery, Sheshnag, Mahaguns, Pisso top and Panjterni on traditional yatra route. The upper heights in Yusmarg in Badgam district also had light snowfall. It was cloudy weather in the summer capital, Srinagar, where the minimum temperature witnessed a surge and settled at 2.8 degree, two notches above normal. It was sub zero yesterday in the city, where business and other activities remained affected due to strike today. People could be seen wearing woollen and warm cloths besides using gas heater and other gadgets for heating purpose because of chill since this morning due to cloudy sky. Met spokesman said the maximum temperature which was three notches below normal yesterday, has witnessed further drop today. He said the sky would be generally cloudy and there is possibility of poor visibility and maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 12 degree, again below normal and two degree respectively during the next 24 hours in Srinagar. The sky is cloudy since early this morning and nothing was visible, a tourist official told over phone from world famous ski resort of Gulmarg. He said it looks rain or snow would occur anytime, he said adding that due to unrest hardly any tourist could be seen. However, he expected good rush of tourists once there is snowfall. Dark clouds resulted in chilly conditions though the minimum temperature was above normal, a report from famed health resort of Pahalgam said. Met spokesman said the sky would be partly cloudy and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 25 degree and 13 degree respectively at Jammu, the winter capital of the state during the next 24 hours. At Leh the the sky would be generally cloudy and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 10 degree and minus 4 degree respectively during the next 24 hours. |
