Rain still eludes Srinagar, chill intensifies in Kashmir | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Nov 22: Dry and chilly weather continued as rain still eluded Kashmir Valley, including summer capital, Srinagar, where day temperature further dipped. The minimum temperature was above normal due to cloudy weather. Authorities have imposed a ban on night travel on the National Highway connecting Ladakh region with Kashmir, historic Mughal Road, linking South Kashmir with Jammu region. Travel during night has also been banned on Bandipora to border town of Gurez to avoid any accident as road becomes slippery during the night. Due to dry weather, the visibility is very poor with the result all air traffic from Srinagar International airport remained suspended for the past four days. A Met department spokesman said here this afternoon that there is possibility of isolated rain in Jammu and Kashmir and during the next 48 hours. Due to cloudy sky the night temperature was above normal though the maximum temperature has recorded further drop in the valley, where people continued to face unprecedented and unscheduled power curtailment. The upper heights in the Kashmir valley received snow during the past 24 hours resulting in chill in the plains, including summer capital, Srinagar, where frequent and unscheduled power cut have become a daily routine. Besides wearing "Pheran", woolen, warm cloths and jackets people are using "Kangri" and other gadgets, mostly run with gas, in the absence of power, for heating purpose. The spokesman said after recording two degree above normal minimum temperature due to cloudy weather, people woke up to a chilly morning in Srinagar, where the maximum temperature was 11.6 degree C, 3.4 degree below normal. He said there is possibility of light rain and the maximum and minimum temperature would be around 11 degree, four notches below normal and two degree respectively in Srinagar during the next 24 hours. However, Leh in Ladakh region remained coldest with minus 4.1 degree C minimum temperature. The lowest was so far recorded about minus 10 degree C. He said the sky would be generally cloudy and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 11 degree C and minus 5 degree C respectively at Leh during the next 24 hours. At winter capital, Jammu the sky would be generally cloudy and the maximum and minimum temperature would be around 24 degree C and 13 degree C respectively during the next 24 hours. An official spokesman said restriction on night travel on Srinagar-Leh National Highway, Shopian in south Kashmir to Rajouri and Poonch in Jamu region and Bandipora to Gurez roads has been imposed for the safety of travellers as road becomes slippery due to below freezing temperature, particularly during night and morning hours. |
