H&TM course in Jammu polytechnic on verge of closure | | | Bijay Charak
Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 22: Realizing the importance of tourism, former Chief Minister Late Mufti Mohammed Sayeed in his first tenure had launched Hospitality and Tourism Management (H&TM) course in the polytechnic colleges of Jammu region. But now the course is on the verge of closure. The course was started on July 21, 2004 and it was called as Diploma in Travel and Tourism. Initially a large number of youth opted for the course but after getting the diploma in their hands, they had no option to pursue higher education in tourism in the state. A diploma holder Rakesh Menia said that not a single youth has been absorbed in government sector so far. The H&TM course was running in two polytechnics of Jammu region-Bikram Chowk Jammu and NITS Polytechnic. But the NITS Polytechnic has withdrawn the course. The Bikram Chowk Polytechnic is the only college of Jammu region where the course is being run. But now the circumstances seem similar to the NITS polytechnic. Now 25 candidates have enrolled in three semesters-four in 5th semester, eight in 3rd semester and six in 2nd semester. If the government fails to show interest, then the college administration has no other option but to end the H&TM course. Castigating government policy, another diploma holder said that when the course was started the authorities had made tall claims that state has a lot of tourism potential, and to provide better hospitality services, there was need of trained staff. "Hundreds of youth opted for course. The number of tourists increased but not a single youth has got a government job", he said. The diploma holders said the reason for decline in enrollment was that thousands of students have so far completed their diploma course in H&TM in the last nine years. But not a single diploma holder has been absorbed in the Tourism Department. They said despite the fact that state has Tourism Department, Tourism Corporation and 28 tourism development authorities, but so far government has not advertised a single post for trained youth. "If the government has no plan for absorbing trained youth, then why are they wasting money on such courses and spoiling the future of students", they asked.
