Mass promotion to ruin JK's education system: Experts | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Nov 22: Academic experts and parents have questioned the logic behind govern-ment's decision of mass promotion from Class 1 to Class 9 and warned that such measures would destroy JK's educational system. They said that this was second time when the Education Minister issued orders of mass promotion to all government and private run educational institutions of the state. One order was issued after the BJP-PDP formed the government in the state in March 2015. The Education minister, in the backdrop of floods, had issued the order of mass promotion to all classes excluding Class 10. Parents while expressing anguish over such a decision have said that it will prove detrimental for the overall future of their wards in the long run and that the government could have handled this subtle issue with greater care and caution. "You are promoting all kids without holding the examinations. It means you are bundling all kids in one category but kids nowadays are hardworking, diligent and competent. How could they face the world tomorrow when today when are inculcating in them the habit of mass promotions," says Professor Aabid, a JK based educationist. He added that the government should have made arrangements for the conductions of exams of atleast class 9th as its students are going to face matriculation the next year. " The fact is that the previous class is a preparation of the next level. If you are promoting students that too without ascertaining their abilities, it will be harmful for the future of education," he added. The general perception on ground in the state is that such a practice of mass promotions has been witnessed in Jammu and Kashmir after the 23 long years. For the first time after 1990, the incumbent education minister ordered the mass promotion in 2015. This is for the second time that such an order has been repeated. Parents said that there was no reason behind promoting the students till Class 9th and 11th without examinations as government could have easily conducted the exams on a similar pattern as it did in Class 10th and Class 12th case. "The government has got resources in hand. It has teachers in abundance in government run schools. It has private schools that could have been directed to hold exams even if with some syllabus relaxation," Showkat Ahmad, a parent said. The experts while sounding alarm at such a trend said the education ministry is proving itself as incompetent in handling the affairs of great importance. "Nowhere in the world is such a trend being witnessed. Holding of exams to judge the ability and competence of the taught is an age old practice. The government is indeed doing disservice to state's educational scenario by promoting the trend of mass promotions," Ghulam Ali, a renowned educationist said. |
