Srinagar, Nov 29: Weather and power woes continued in the Kashmir valley, including summer capital, Srinagar, where there is possibility of light rain or snow at isolated places during the next 24 hours. Leh with minus 4.6 continued to remain coldest place in the region followed by border town of Kargil in Ladakh region. Barring world famous ski resort of Gulmarg and Kokernag the minimum temperature remained below freezing in the valley. People are facing acute unscheduled power cuts for hours in the valley, including majority parts of Srinagar. A Met department spokesman said here this evening that light rain or snow would occur at isolated places in the Jammu and Kashmir during the next 24 hours. There will be no major change in the weather in the state during the subsequent 48 hours, he said. However, despite almost daily forecast of rain or snow, weather remained dry in the plains in the valley, including Srinagar, where chilly conditions resulted in cold related diseases, including chest infection, fever and headache, particularly among the children and elderly persons. Doctors have advised people to go out of their homes only after covering their head and face in the morning and evening hours when the temperature goes down. Long queues of patients could be seen outside private clinics and hospitals, having cold related diseases. The minimum temperature recorded improvement though it was still below freezing point at Leh. Against yesterdays minus 8.3 degree yesterday, it was minus 4.6 degree. At border town of Kargil on the highway, connecting Ladakh region with Kashmir, the minimum temperature was 4.4 degree. The minimum temperature was between minus 15 degree to minus 25 degree in the heights, including on the Line of Control (LoC), where security forces remained deployed to prevent any infiltration from Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK). Met spokesman said isolated rain could occur in Ladakh region during the next 24 hours. Light rain or snow could occur and the maximum and minimum temperature would be around 7 degree and minus 3 degree respectively during the next 24 hours in Leh. Kupwara in north Kashmir was coldest after the minimum temperature was recorded minus 2.9 degree followed by famed health resort of Pahalgam minus 2.2 degree. The summer capital continued to record sub zero temperature due to dry weather and clear sky, particularly during the night. The minimum temperature was minus 1.3 degree, more than a notch below normal. He said there is possibility of light rain or snow and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 12 degree and one degree respectively during the next 24 hours in Srinagar. |
