Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 16: Two weeks after the students of department of physical education university of Jammu started their protest against the incumbent director Prof. Avtar Singh Jasrotia for his unruly behavior and conduct with students and staff of the department, JU administration has stayed inert to the concerns of the students, impelling the students to intensify their protests.
Students of the BPEd and MPEd courses were asked by the committees of the professors to suspend their protest for few days to enable the JU authorities to arrive at a decision with regards to their concerns. However, while the students kept their commitment, the authorities failed to respond to their genuine concerns infuriating the students, who resumed their protests at the campus with greater intensity and vengeance on Friday.
According to sources, representatives of the students again approached the authorities seeking removal of the incumbent director and appointment of a permanent director for the department, but the authorities continued to be indifferent to their concerns. The students sought a parley with the vice chancellor, but he refused them the opportunity. Infuriated students then booed the VC when the latter came out of his office. He however had already called the police sensing the anguish within the students. When the students continued to protest and confront the VC through sloganeering and jeering, the Police swung into action to ensure safe passage to the VC. The infuriated students later started protesting outside the main gate of the university and the traffic was disrupted on the vital road during peak hour.
Questions are meanwhile being raised on VC's indecisiveness over students' demand. "Entire university fraternity has admitted that our demand was genuine as Jasrotia did not deserve to be director of the department for the very reason that he is an alien to sports" said one of the protesting students. "Why can't VC fill up the post that stands vacant for thirty years?" he questioned.
The students had started their protests on February 1, after Jasrotia issued a circular imposing ban on students from participating in any state/national level tournaments. Besides, he had been generating lot of anguish among the students through his conduct and unreasonable dictates.
While the ignorance, arrogance and incompetence of the said director, who is a complete greenhorn in the field of sports has embarrassed the JU administration repeatedly and even the Chancellor has expressed his displeasure over the working of the department, it is strange that the VC continued to grant him lose rope even when a criminal case was registered against him.
