Farmers sensitized about pesticide free pest management

Jammu, Feb 4: About sixty farmers were sensitized about pesticide free pest management at village Dablehar, Bishnah in an outreach programme organized by Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology-Jammu.
The programme was organized under Department of Biotechnology (DBT) Govt. of India sponsored project on "community based mass production of bioagents ---- in Jammu".
At the onset of programme, Dr. R. K. Gupta, Principal Investigator of the project awakened the farmers about the ill effect of pesticides on human health and ecosystem. In the 2nd session they were demonstrated about biological products including bio pesticides and Bio-rationals and how such products can be used by them managing and maintaining them on winter vegetables by Dr. Kamlesh Bali, Co-Investigator of the project.
On field practical skills were also imparted to farmers on use plant origin pesticides such as Neem Seed Kernal Extract (NSKE), Darank seed and Pongamia seed etc, seed treatment with Trichoderma and use of egg parasoitoid Trichogramma for managing tomato fruit borer. Detailed discussions were held with farmers on use vermin-compost, green manuring and balanced use of nutrients to improve the soil health as well.
Dr. Rakesh Sharma, SMS shared experience on success stories being carried out on IPM in Jammu region and their impact on livelihood of farmers. He further emphasized the farmers to work in a community to use homemade bio pesticides to boost the pesticide free crop production in the area. Progressive farmers of the area Sh. Natha Ram, master Harnam Dass and
Jagdish Raj appealed the fellow farmers to use of traditional bio pesticides and bio-agents for pesticide free crop production in the area and emphasized the need for such demonstration programmes for the benefit of the farming community. The farmers were also provided minikits for testing the outcome of the use of bio pesticides.
