Cong leader, retd top cop ask Crime Branch to go slow | Top CB official threatens to resign if political interference continues | | Early Times Report Jammu, Mar 30: A top Congress leader and a retired top cop are reportedly trying to intimidate the Crime Branch officials, investigating the case registered against a bureaucrat, who was sacked after a purported audio clip about him demanding bribe from his subordinate went viral. Sources told Early Times the top Congress leader and the former top cop have called up the Crime Branch officials and have asked them to go slow in the case. "One of the top Crime Branch officials has expressed reservation and has threatened to resign if the political interference continues," they added. Insiders revealed that the Crime Branch officials are verifying the authenticity of the audio clip, in which the accused bureaucrat purportedly said he would get a graft case hushed up by bribing someone at the top, went viral. In the audio clip, he had told his subordinate engineers to pool Rs 10 lakh, which, he said, had to be paid to somebody at the top who would ensure that a case pending with the state anti-Soon after the audio clip went viral the Jammu and Kashmir government ordered an inquiry to find out who he (the bureaucrat) was referring to as the "top person" who had to be gratified for getting the case hushed up. Insiders revealed that the top Congress leader has called his friends in the ruling alliance to get the case pushed under the carpet as the accused bureaucrat is his "close man." "On the other hand a former top cop, who has got the standing offer to join the Congress party, is using his old connections to save the skin of the bureaucrat in question," they added. Sources said that Crime Branch during the recent past has sent many summons to the accused bureaucrat. "He (the accused) has not responded to the summons and notices which have been sent to him," they added. A source said that the official in question has many corruption cases pending against him. "Till date no action was taken against him as he enjoyed strong political backing from local politicians as well the leaders sitting in New Delhi. During his entire career he has been above the law," the source added. He said, "This time around Crime Branch has made a water tight case against him and if the investigations continue at the same pace it can put the bureaucrat in a tight spot." |
