BJP again lets down Jammu, Ladakh
Suchetgarh meet
4/3/2018 1:38:59 AM

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Apr 2: People of Jammu and Ladakh were anxiously waiting that the BJP during its (March 31-April 1) executive meet at Suchetgarh, Jammu, would come out with a concrete action plan aimed at redressing the grievances of the people of these two neglected regions, but it didn’t happen. Instead of telling the government of which it is a part that it will walk out of the government if the Jammu and Ladakh-specific issues were not addressed, it only adopted meaningless resolutions.
The people of Nowshera had been agitating since 46 days and urging the state government to confer the status of district on the three sub-divisions of Nowshera, Kalakot and Sunderbani, but the BJP adopted a resolution seeking appointment of a commission to look into demands of the people in different parts of the state seeking district status for their respective areas.
The people of Jammu had been crying since decades that their representation in the assembly was inadequate and that a delimitation commission be appointed so that the assembly constituencies were delimited and they got a proper representation in the assembly and end the Kashmiri domination and hegemony, but the BJP let down them by adopting a vague resolution.
The people of Jammu had hoped that the BJP becoming part of the state government would lead to the dropping of cases against the Jammu youth whose only fault was that they played an active role during the 2008 Amarnath land agitation, but the BJP disappointed them as it didn’t assert its position and authority in its desperate bid to retain control over power it got by an accident.
The dropping of cases of over 9,700 stone pelters in Kashmir last month filled the hearts of the people of Jammu with a hope that the cases against the Jammu youth would also be dropped, but it didn’t happen. And the BJP executive meet instead of asking its own government to do the needful only passed a resolution.
The BJP’s resolutions also treated the refugees from Pakistan and the internally-displaced Kashmiri Hindus and the unemployed Jammu youth shabbily. There was nothing whatsoever in the resolution; only rhetoric and no concrete proposal.
The BJP executive meet also thought it proper to ignore the demands in Jammu for the abrogation of Article 35A and 370 and adopted a vague resolution on Rohingyas and Bangladeshis issue. Same was the story of its attitude towards toll plaza at Lakhanpur and anti-Jammu Public Service Commission. It only adopted vague resolutions on both these issues.
The BJP executive meet also left in the lurch the agitating people of Hiranagar and women who sat on fat-unto-death on Saturday to force the state government to hand over the alleged Kathua murder case to CBI and the unemployed Jammu youth. While the BJP rejected outright the demand seeking CBI probe, the BJP leaders asserted that the Jammu youth were getting their due share in the job sector. The fact is that the BJP executive meet only rubbed salt on the wounds of the suffering people of Hiranagar and youth of Jammu.
Even with regard to talks with Pakistan, the BJP talked in two languages. One senior leader said there was no question of New Delhi talking to Pakistan as Pakistan had not stopped exporting terrorism into Jammu & Kashmir, another senior BJP leader and a minister said that it was the prerogative of the Central Government to talk or not to talk to Pakistan.
As for the far off Ladakh, there was nothing whatsoever for it in any of the resolutions. Leave aside the age-old demand in Ladakh seeking UT status for their strategic region.
The fact of the matter is that the BJP executive members met, ate, gossip and dispersed without doing anything for the people of Jammu and Ladakh, its core constituencies. One thing became absolutely clear during the executive meet: The BJP has forgotten Jammu and Ladakh and that it was a party that could go to any extent to keep the PDP in a good humour.
