HC issues notice to I&FC | Waste Management in Irrigation Canals | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Apr 6: With an aim of clearing irrigation canals from plastic and solid waste , the Irrigation and Flood Control Department (I&FC) has been issued notice by High Court on Wednesday. The Division Bench of HC has sought a report from the department by May 15 in this regard. As reported already, High Court division bench of acting Chief Justice S Ramalingam and Justice M K Hanjura while hearing a PIL filed by Environmental Policy Group (EPG) issued notices to several Govt organisations like Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC), Tourism , Horticulture , HUDD , Agriculture, Rural Development and several other departments asking them to file status report by May 15. In addition to it the High Court was told by the petitioner organisation through their counsel Shafqat Nazir that majority of Irrigation canals across J&K are filled with plastic and all kinds of trash which needs to be cleared. The high court division bench took this issue very seriously and issued notice to the concerned department through its Commissioner Secretary to file his status report about the measures taken by the deptt to address this issue. Pertinently Swachh NeharAbhiyaan (Clean Canal Campaign) under which major irrigation canals in Jammu and other towns were supposed to be cleaned by way of scientific solid waste management as per the guidelines of Solid Waste Management Rules (SWM Rules 2016) was launched by IFC Chief Engineer Jammu last year , but the officer was prematurely transferred from his post. |
