Jammu, Apr 13: Shivani Charak, an ace sport climber of J&K who has been selected by Indian Mountaineering Foundation, apex body for adventure sports in the country, to represent India in the 18th Asian Games to be held at Jakarta-Palenbang (Indonesia) from 18th August to 2nd September, 2018, was felicitated today in an impressive function organized jointly by Mountaineering Association of J&K and Tawi Trekkers J&K at Press Club Jammu. While Chief Guest on the occasion Ashwani Sharma, a former MLA presented bouquet to Shivani, the other dignitaries including Zorawar Singh Jamwal, Secretary General, Press Club Jammu;Prem Sadotra, General Secretary, J&K High Court Bar Association, Haji Abdul Qayoom, Chief Sports Officer, J&K State Sports Council and Rahul Sharma, Chairman, Sprawling Buds ICSE School, Bantalab, Jammu profusely garlanded the champion climber. All of them wished her a grand success in the forthcoming Asian Games. While congratulating Shivani for her selection in the Indian team, Ram Khajuria, General Secretary of Mountaineering Association of J&K lauded her achievements which led to her selection in the Indian team. He told the gathering that besides 5 gold medals in the last 2 years in the North Zone Competitions she had bagged 3 Silver medals in the national competition in 2016 followed by 2 Gold and 1 silver medal in 2017. She was also deputed for training to 3 European countries Switzerland, Italy and Slovenia before her participation in the World cup in Sport Climbing at Navi Mumbai in June, 2017. Shivani, being only 17 years old at present has a long career ahead of her and the Association is confident that she will surely get into the Olympics in the year 2020 at Tokyo, Japan, he said. Khajuria told the gathering that Shivani Charak is the 4th person from J&K during the last 70 years to participate in the Asian Games. Out of the 3 other sports persons who have participated in the Asian Games earlier, 2 had been trained by Indian Army as they were serving in armed forces. |
