Former Army Chief joins fray for appointment of new Governor of JK | Suhag, Hasnain to fight it out despite PDP's reservation | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Apr 13: Despite reservations by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) a former Army General has joined the fray for the top most gubernatorial post in Jammu & Kashmir. Sources told Early Times that former chief of army staff Lt Gen (Retired) Dalbir Singh Suhag has joined the race for the post of Governor of Jammu & Kashmir. Former General Officer Commanding (GOC) 15 Corps Lt Gen (Retired) Syed Ata Hasnain has been a top contender for the top notch gubernatorial in the state. "For a long time Lt Gen (Retired) Hasnain has been in fray for the post of Governor in the state. Of late Lt Gen (Retired) Suhag has joined the race in this regard. It remains to be seen who would emerge the victorious in this respect since there are some other parameters attached to this whole issue," said sources. Sources said that Bharatiya Janta Party's coalition partner in the state PDP has expressed reservations over the entry of army generals in the fray for the position of Governor in the state. The party believes that a political personality should be appointed as the next governor in Jammu & Kashmir. "The PDP believes that if an army general is appointed as Governor of Jammu & Kashmir it would lead to further alienation of people in valley from the mainstream. The party leaders opine that a political personality should be appointed on the top most gubernatorial post in the state. The party is vehemently opposing appointment of an army man as Governor of the state," said sources. Sources said that PDP has already conveyed its reservations to the Government of India and impressed upon the people at helm in New Delhi to accept its demand vis-à-vis appointment of new Governor in Jammu & Kashmir. The party wants it request to be heeded to and for the same it is going to walk an extra mile. "Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has already talked to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in this regard and made her own and her party's stand clear on the issue. Similar reservations have been conveyed to Home Minister Rajnath Singh as well. PDP believes that its reputation would take a hit in case an army general is appointed as the new Governor of the state," said sources. It would be in place to mention here that PDP and BJP have been at loggerheads in the state over the past three years or so. The Kathua rape incident is the latest episode of controversy between the two parties. While PDP has said that Crime Branch of Jammu & Kashmir Police is competent enough to solve the case its coalition partner has been pitching for handing over the probe to Central Bureau of Investigation. The incident led to an interesting development today as two ministers of BJP Chaudhary Lal Singh and Chander Prakash Ganga resigned and submitted their resignation to BJP Chief Sat Kumar Sharma. Singh and Ganga had taken part in a rally organized in favour of the accused in March. |
