300 lavatories open into Doodh Ganga | A polluted water source | | Early Times Report Srinagar, May 10: At a time when authorities at the helm of affairs are claiming of making Srinagar and its neighboring districts Open Defecation Free (ODF), reliable sources and field visit by Early Times reporters have found that more than 300 lavatories and household sewerage from hundreds of houses and business units enters into the waters of Doodh Ganga from filtration plant Kralpora to Branwar village in Budgam which is spread at a stretch of 23 kms. The Department of Public Health Engineering (PHE) is supplying same water to almost 6 lakh population in Srinagar which is leading to several health disorders. Details available with Early Times reveal that hundreds of lavatories , and household liquid waste continues to enter into Doodh Ganga at Kralpora , Wathoora , Chadoora and other villages of Budgam and same water is lifted at Kralpora water filtration plant from last 40 years. The situation is alarming as chlorination or sedimentation process is not making water safe for drinking purpose. With an of supplying so called safe drinking water to Srinagar uptown J&K Economic Reconstruction Agency (ERA) is laying of Raw water pipeline from higher reaches of Doodh Ganga at village Nowhaar in Chadoora to Kralpora water treatment plant. Now water from Doodh Ganga will be lifted at Nowhaar which is 18 kms up Kralpora. PHE officials say that by end of June this year , 12 Million Gallons of fresh water will be lifted at Nowhaar every day and out of it 10 MG / day will be supplied to Kralpora plant. Sources say that Nowhaar is not the last village located on the banks of Doodh Ganga. There are more than half a dozen habitations like Bonyaar, Pethyaar, Surasyaar, Check Surasyaar, Brenwar etc where from water comes down to newly established mega water supply scheme at Nowhaar. Population in these habitations will increase in the coming years. Right now lot of fecal matter , solid and liquid waste continues to enter Doodh Ganga around these habitations especially in rainy season. Immediate attention of authorities is sought on following points. "Government in order to ensure supply of safe drinking water to Srinagar , Chadoora and adjoining areas must declare these villages Open Defecation Free (ODF) and small Sewerage Treatment Plants (STPs) must be established in all these villages / habitations so that not even 5 % of the liquid waste enters into Doodh Ganga. Scientific solid and liquid waste management programme must be put in place in Chadoora town and adjoining villages as well. Research on side effects of excessive use of Chlorine during water purification must be conducted. No more water be lifted from Doodh Ganga at Kralpora after commissioning of Nowhaar water supply scheme " said Dr Sajad Hussain a public health expert "Today as we claim to have become Open Defecation Free (ODF) much developed but it is shameful for Government when the Chadoora Municipality dumps the solid and liquid waste into Doodh Ganga. This unhygienic and polluted water continues to be lifted at Doodh Ganga water treatment plant Kralpora in the outskirts of Srinagar and is supplied to as many as two dozen residential colonies in Rawalpora , Hyderpora , Jawahar Nagar , Rajbagh , Chanapora , Nowgam areas " said Fayaz Ahmad Mir a resident of Bagh e Mehtab Srinagar Local residents of Wathoora , Gopalpora and Kralpora are now planning to file a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in J&K High Court so that Govt starts scientific solid and liquid waste management. Local residents have appealed CEO ERA Farooq Ahmad Lone to lift water from Branwar area instead of Nowhar for the new drinking water supply scheme as Nowhar and surrounding areas has lot of open lavatories which find way into Doodh Ganga. " It will be useless to spend cores of money on this scheme , we can't allow Govt to lift contaminated water and supply same to us. It is better Govt lifts water at Branwar power plant as this area has no habitations around " said Bashir Ahmad a resident of Gopalpora. |
