Chaos, confusion on first day on stretch of JCRB flyover thrown open for traffic | Despite advisory vehicles move from both sides | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, May 11: Chaos and confusion was witnessed on the stretch of Jehangir Chowk-Rambagh (JCRB) flyover that was thrown open by chief minister Mehbooba Mufti earlier in the day today. Despite the traffic advisory that the flyover would be open for traffic only from one side, vehicles could be seen moving from the opposite side on the flyover as well. Due to the traffic from both the sides there was complete chaos, confusion and anarchy on the flyover with vehicles breezing past from both the sides. Many vehicles bound for Jehangir Chowk and the adjacent areas from Natipora, Chanapora, Nowgam and other areas took wrong turn near the Barzulla Bridge and carried out their journey through the flyover. The chaos and confusion was visible more in the evening hours than the day time. Since no traffic policeman was posted near the Barzulla Bridge opposite to Meteorological (MeT) department in the evening it was free day for the motorists who were on look out to violate the traffic advisory and use the flyover for their journey towards the city centre. This resulted into a situation where road accidents could not be ruled out. At the same time there were many people who were seen taking selfies and photos on the flyover. This group of people parked their cars, scooters, scooties and motor-cycles on the flyover and were seen busy in capturing the moment in their mobile phones. This too came up as big problem on the flyover and the people driving their vehicles on the same. In an advisory the city traffic police has asked the commuters travelling to Budgam, Hyderpora, Rawalpora, Baghat-Barzalla and Airport to use the JCRB flyover for commuting. It said that he traffic on the flyover shall be exclusively for one-way traffic and no traffic in the opposite direction will be allowed towards Tulsi Bagh. The advisory said that commuters travelling to Chanapora and Natipora have been asked to adopt Rambagh Bridge beneath the flyover. A couple travelling on a motorcycle sustained injuries after being hit by a vehicle on the first day of the operation of JCRB flyover. Earlier in the day the phase first of JCRB flyover was thrown open for traffic by Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti. Being built at a cost of Rs. 350 crore, the ADB funded project would hugely decongest the traffic on the road towards Barzulla and Srinagar Airport and the time to cover the area would also be reduced by a great measure. An official said that the Natipora limb of the project is going to be made trafficable within two months and the whole four lane flyover spanning more than two and half kilometres would be made functional by the year end. The project is being executed by the Jammu and Kashmir Economic Reconstruction Agency (JKERA). It would be in place to mention here that the work on JCRB flyover was started in March 2013 and it was expected to be completed in two and half years. The project missed the original deadline of completion due to the flood of 2014 and the summer unrest of 2016. |
