Why silence over 4 rapes in Jammu province in 24 hrs?
Double standards of politicians, activists exposed

Early Times Report
JAMMU, May 11: There has been no hue and cry over four alleged rape cases reported from Jammu province on Thursday.
In Satwari area of Jammu city, a minor hailing from Uttar Pradesh reported to school administration that her cousin allegedly raped her. The school reported the matter to the child line which lodged a complaint with Satwari police. The police took the minor victim for medical examination and registered an FIR in this connection.
In the city again, in Nagrota area, a woman lodged complaint with police that one of her relatives who had visited her house raped her after finding her alone there.
In Reasi district, two persons raped a minor girl in Tanda village falling in the jurisdiction of police post Dera Baba. Acting on a complaint, the police rushed to the spot and managed to arrest one of the accused. The other accused managed to flee from the area. Consequently, a Board of Doctors was constituted and the girl was taken to District Hospital (DH) Reasi for medical examination and a case in this connection has been registered at Reasi police station.
In Kishtwar district, a girl reported to the police that a man namely Mohammad Amin raped her. After medical examination of the girl a case was registered and the accused arrested.
Shockingly, these four rape cases went unnoticed, unlike the rape and murder of a minor in Rassana area of Kathua in January this year. No saner person would condone the Rassana rape and murder or these four rape cases. Rape is a rape, after all, and its victim is a victim irrespective of her religion or the region she belongs to. At the same time, though,  these four rapes prompt one to ask some important questions.
(a) Where are the politicians and the so-called netas and leaders who raised a hue and cry over the Rassana incident? Is it that they did not deem it fit to ask for justice in these four rapes as it wouldn’t fetch them a heavy political capital as the Rassana rape and murder case did?
(b) Where are the self-styled champions of child and women rights who launched a major campaign over the Rassana rape and murder?
(b) Rape is a rape, whether it happens in Kathua, Jammu, Reasi, Kishtwar or Kupwara. The law should take its course wherever a rape happens. Why this selective outrage then? Why is there silence over the four rapes? Are these four girls children of the lesser God? Isn’t this silence criminal?
(c) Haven’t these four rape cases exposed the double standards of many people—politicians, lawyers, activists, journalists, civil society members—who are virtually on the streets, and in TV studios posing themselves as crusaders against violence against girls?
(d) Why is no lawyer coming forward to fight the cases of these four rape victims?
These and many more questions beg for answers from the self-styled champions of humanity. Early Times would eagerly wait for answers from these opportunist politicians, netas, leaders, lawyers, and activists, and we pledge to give due coverage to their campaign for justice for these four rape victims. Is anybody listening?
