PDP-BJP coalition crumbling | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, May 13: Will the PDP-BJP coalition, which late Mufti Sayeed termed as coalition of North and South Poles, survive or will it crumble sooner than later? If what the MoS in PMO Jitendra Singh has said is any indication, then it can be safely said that the PDP-BJP coalition is heading towards a major crisis. It may not last long. Whatever MoS in PMO says is always meaningful and it just can't be ignored or brushed aside. What did he say about the much-talked about unilateral ceasefire? Reacting to Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti's suggestion for a unilateral ceasefire ahead of and during Ramzan, he said: "People talking about refraining from violence are doing politics in the name of Ramzan". His unambiguous and candid statement came two days after the Jammu and Kashmir unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rejected out-of-hand Mehbooba Mufti's suggestion for a unilateral ceasefire, claiming that "such a measure is not in the national interest". "As the Home Minister said, there is no forward proposal on it. People who say this must advise terrorists that being Muslims, they should refrain from violence. If they don't follow this advice, they are doing politics in the name of Ramzan," Jitendra Singh said. What the MoS in PMO said could be construed as a big rejection of the Chief Minister's proposal. It bears recalling that after the all-party meeting, which was held in Srinagar on Wednesday, CM Mehbooba Mufti had told reporters that "It was the unanimous decision of all parties during the meeting that the Government of India should consider a ceasefire ahead of Ramzan and the Amarnath yatra". "People are facing trouble because of the security forces' crackdowns and search operations. If these are put to a halt and a unilateral ceasefire is announced, the people will get some relief," she had said. It's not just that MoS in PMO made the stand of New Delhi vis-à-vis unilateral ceasefire clear. Officers in the security agencies also didn't really favour the Chief Minister's suggestion and that too in her own presence during the Unified Headquarters meeting at Srinagar on May 12: When Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti asked security forces to "scale down counter-insurgency operations during the Muslim fasting month of Ramazan, which begins next week", senior officers of various security agencies, reportedly told the Chief Minister that "they will 'think over' about the proposal after considering its practicability". The Chief Minister was chairing the Unified Headquarters meeting. It was perhaps for the first that officers of the security agencies took such a bold stand in presence of the Chief Minister. So, what MoS in PMO and senior officers of the security agencies said should establish that the gulf between the Government of India and the Mufti-led government is widening with each passing day. |
