No consensus on ceasefire at APM, Chidambaram | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, May 13: It is too well known that there was no consensus on a unilateral ceasefire with terrorists and Pakistan during the May 9 All-Party Meeting (APM) held at Srinagar. Only one lawmaker from Kashmir -- known for his anti-India stand -- Engineer Rashid raked the issue of a unilateral ceasefire during the month of Ramazan. But there was no discussion on the issue. On May 10, the BJP held a press conference in Jammu to tell the people that there was no discussion on the issue and that the BJP was opposed to the very idea of a unilateral ceasefire as the situation in Kashmir was very bad and declaration of a unilateral ceasefire would only help terrorists and anti-India forces to regroup themselves for a major offensive. Not only the BJP as a party rejected the demand and contested the consensus claim. Deputy Chief Minister Kavinder Gupta also said the same and asserted that there was o discussion on the issue. "Only a couple of persons raised the issue," the Deputy Chief Minister said while clearing the air. The JKNPP leaders, including Harsh Dev Singh, who took part in the APM, too, like the BJP, called the bluff and set the record straight saying no discussion on the issue of a unilateral ceasefire took place. Leave aside the BJP. The NC, the PDP's arch-political rival, which also attended the APM, also punctured the PDP's balloon, saying there was no discussion on the unilateral ceasefire suggestion, and, hence, the question of consensus didn't arise. In fact, senior NC leader and lawmaker Ramzan Chaudhary went on record saying there was no discussion and there was no consensus. As if all this was not enough to clear all the cobwebs of confusion, the lone CPI-M lawmaker from Kulgam, Kashmir, Mohd Yousuf Tarigami, also endorsed the claim that there was no discussion on the issue. Tarigami also participated in the meeting, which continued for over 4 hours under Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti. However, senior Congress leader and former Union Home Minister P Chidambaram today took a stand that the PDP took on May 9 after the APM was over. Talking to reporters after the meeting, the PDP president announced that there was a consensus on the issue of unilateral ceasefire and the Union Government should consider the proposal. Chidambaram on Sunday claimed that on May 9 "all the political parties in Jammu & Kashmir resolved unanimously to call upon the Central Government to announce a unilateral ceasefire". He made this claim to take on the Chief of the Army Staff General Bipin Rawat, who on May 9 had made it loud and clear that there "azadi was not coming" and that "the Army was there to defeat the break-India forces" and that "the Army would take care of those who would attack the Army". P Chidambaram should have at least consulted the local Congress leaders before making this ridiculous claim. After all, local Congress leaders were also present in the APM on May 9. Why Chidambaram made a false statement? Only he and the Congress leaders could explain. But one thing is certain: his statement on a unilateral ceasefire has created a sort of confusion. And this is not desirable. |
