PDD's need based workers denied wages for 6 yrs | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, May 25: The government seems to have turned a blind eye towards the plight of need based workers engaged by Power Development Department (PDD). Even though the causal workers have been compelled to work round the clock, the department has failed to pay their wages for the last six years. In absences of wages, most of the need based workers/causal workers are compelled to do menial jobs to make their ends meet. Nearly 3405 need based workers were engaged in different divisions of PDD across Jammu division. For last five days they have been staging protest at Chief Engineer Office, Canal Road Jammu for release of their wages, but the department has failed to address their genuine demands. A need based employee, Pardeep Kumar who is working as lineman at Gandhi Nagar division said, "I have been working with the department for last eight years, but for the last four years I am without wages and every time the officials deputed there have denied the salaries citing paucity of funds." Narrating his family condition, he said, "My daughter has just passed out the 10th board examination and now she is applying for next class. But I am worried about arranging her admission fee and other expenses due to absence of salaries." He said that like him there are more than thousand need based workers who have been facing same hardships and feel ashamed in front of their children when they fail to meet their genuine demands like uniform, tuition fee. Another need based employees, Surinder Kumar said that before the incumbent Power Minister, there were two former Chief Minister including Mufti Mohammed Sayeed and Omar Abdullah and one Deputy Chief Minister, Dr Nirmal Singh who held the portfolio of PDD. But all of them did not pay any heed to the genuine issues being faced by need based workers. He said more than 50 causal and need based workers have died while discharging their duty in the last one decade while more than hundred got fatal injuries and became handicapped due to electrocution but they never got compensation as per norms of the department. |
