| Appointed for reviving PSUs, VCs enjoy foreign trips | | |

srinagar, May 25: They were appointed to improve Public Sector Undertakings, but most of the time they could be found outside the state on national and international tours.
This is what the second rung politicians of PDP and BJP have been doing. These politicians were rehabilitated as vice-chairmen of different PSUs which are in no way profit-making bodies.
"We don't know what the role of VCs is. They go on foreign tours on the state exchequer. One of the VCs, who is from the BJP has toured several countries since his appointment," a source said.
"Unlike regular government officials, these VCs are not accountable to anybody. They come to office as per their own choice. Nobody can ask them for what purpose they go for tours, putting a huge burden on the state exchequer," the source said. "Barring few, all the VCs have gone on foreign tours in the last few years."
The government had 16 party functionaries from the ruling coalition comprising PDP, BJP and Peoples Conference (PC) as VCs of several PSUs.
They are being paid a consolidated monthly salary of Rs 80,000 in addition to perks and allowances admissible under relevant rules to be borne by the government but not the concerned corporations and the autonomous bodies that according to sources are already running in red and overburdened with huge liabilities.
These appointments were made to pacify the politicians ,who could have turned rebels.
Sources said that government also has to bear expenses for their accommodation. The government has to arrange multiple accommodations for them.
"We have to arrange additional staff in their personnel section. There also have to be vehicles for them and the government has to pay lakhs on their fuel," the sources said.
An official said that their appointments have put a huge burden on the state exchequer.
A politician while mocking at these political appointments said that these are nothing more than an extra burden on the state exchequer. "No one expects most of these VCs to deliver as they are nothing more than toothless tigers," he added. |
