| Srinagar is capital of the state, Jammu city figures nowhere | | Begging banned in Kashmir, not in Jammu | | Early Times Report
Jammu, May 25: Once again Jammu and Kashmir government has discriminated with the Jammu region. It has banned begging at public places in Kashmir but not in Jammu.
An order here issued by Deputy Commissioner Srinagar Syed Abid Rasheed Shah while invoking the Jammu & Kashmir Prevention of Beggary Act I960 said, "Being an offence under that Act, it is imperative that strict necessary action under law be initiated against the offenders."
In his order, the district magistrate said, "Srinagar being the capital city of the state with a vast population, it is contingent upon the administration to take all measures necessary to make the district more citizen friendly & to prevent public nuisance at all costs. Further being a prime tourist destination, it is home to tourists both domestic and foreign," the order reads.
An analyst said that the people at the helm seem to have forgotten that Jammu too is the winter capital of the state and the beggars are in prowl in the entire district. "Number of tourists visiting Jammu is higher than the number of tourists visiting Srinagar. Beggars have become a nuisance for the Jammu people," he added.
He said that it's not for the first time that Jammu has been ignored by the people at the helm. They keep on doing it. "Jammu never has been a priority for the Kashmir centric politicians. They have always focused on Kashmir and Srinagar," the analyst added.
He said that it's unfortunate that the BJP leaders, who won 25 seats in the last assembly elections in Jammu region, are just acting as mute spectators and have nothing to say. "When the J&K government had decided to ban the beggary in Srinagar they (BJP leaders and ministers) could have intervened and prevailed upon their colleagues in PDP to get a similar order issued for Jammu region. But they just kept quiet and made no effort to end the beggary in the winter capital," the analyst said. |
