Rasana has changed Jammu's political scene
No to Kashmiri hegemony
5/28/2018 11:50:03 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, May 28: The January 2018 developments in Jammu's Rasana in Hiranagar tehsil have changed the political scene of Jammu province to a considerable extent. At Rasana, an eight-year-old tribal girl was allegedly raped and murdered and her body was recovered on January 17 from forest area. Ever since then, developments have been unfolding not only in Kathua and Samba districts but also in other districts of Jammu province, including Jammu district, which suggest that the people of Jammu are no more prepared to live a life of servitude or accept Kashmiri hegemony over the state's polity and economy.
What has changed the Jammu's scenario is the refusal of the authorities to the popular demand in Jammu for CBI probe into the Kathua case and the manner the J&K Government and its Crime Branch and the BJP Government at the centre have handled the issue. They should have accepted the demand as it had the backing of impartial authorities like the Bar Council of India and Group of Intellectuals and Academicians and all civil society groups in Jammu, including the J&K HC Bar Association Jammu, the premier organization of the legal fraternity in the state. Had the authorities accepted this demand and not created an impression across the globe that those demanding CBI probe were "communal" and "pro-rapist, things would have been somewhat different in Jammu province.
The people of Jammu took this rejection and no-holds-barred vilification campaign as an affront to their self-respect and also as an affront to what they call the "Dogra Pride". The result is what the nation has been witnessing in Jammu province: Demonstrations, dharnas, sit-ins, fast-un-to-death, long march from Kathua to Londi Morh to Kootah, meetings and what not -- all for CBI probe and for the protection and promotion of the "Dogra Pride", "Dogra Identity", "Dogra Culture", "Dogra History" and "Dogra heritage".
There are reports emanating from different parts of Jammu province that the concerned people are holding meetings to discuss ways and means leading to the real empowerment and an effective say of Jammu in the governance and end of what they are dismissing as "Kashmiri hegemony". Not just concerned citizens of Jammu province, senior leaders from different political parties are also meeting each other to discuss the issues facing the people of Jammu province and the failure of the ruling BJP to rise to the occasion by standing with its own constituency.
Reports clearly suggest that serious moves are afoot aimed at establishing a "Jammu province-centric regional party" convinced that "no national party - BJP or Congress - could defeat the regional outfits in Kashmir - NC and PDP -" and that "only a regional party could defend and promote the legitimate interests of the people of Jammu province". There are also reports that senior Congress leader Sham Lal Sharma, who only recently resigned from the post of Senior Vice-President of the party; Karan Singh's son and Maharaja Hari Singh's grandson Vikramaditya Singh, who resigned as MLC and from PDP on the Jammu issue; and Lal Singh, who was made to resign from the ministry on the Rassana issue, have met each other and discussed what should be done to protect the "Dogra Pride" and "end Kashmiri hegemony".
All in all, it can be said that things in Jammu are changing, and changing very fast and that there is the possibility of people of Jammu challenging the 70-year-old Kashmiri hegemony over the state polity, economy and social institutions. It's just a matter of time when the nation would witness confrontation between the two regions.
