JK on high alert as 20 militants sneak into Kashmir | | | Ishtiyaq Ahmad Early Times Report Srinagar, June, 1: A security alert has been issued in Jammu and Kashmir following intelligence inputs that a group of atleast 20 militants have entered Kashmir and could be planning large-scale attacks. Sources told early times that an alert circulated by intelligence agencies has asked the counter-intelligence grid in valley to be on alert. "The alert, issued by intelligence agencies warned that there was a 'strong input' that the group could carry out the attack in the valley and other parts of the state," sources said. They added that the police and other security agencies have increased the patrolling and carried out a series of area domination operations in the region to thwart militant attacks. They said that the note on the alert about the militants was dispatched to all district police chiefs in state especially of the Kashmir zone, directing them to ensure that high alert could be maintained. "The matter may be treated as most urgent," it warned. One of the top officials of the police confirmed that the alert had been issued. Inputs suggest that militants have infiltrated from the Line of Control's Pir Panjal Mountains to India. "Infiltrators have divided themselves into sub-groups and are believed to be heavily armed and well-trained," a senior police officer said. According to Police, for the next two-three days, the entire state has been put on alert. "This weekend is crucial, that's why police have put all on alert," sources added. According to intelligence inputs, JeM militants split into groups could carry out major attacks on June 2 - the 17th day of Ramzan. Last year too, JeM militants had carried out a series of attacks in the state. Sources told Early Times that hotels and guest houses are being checked for the presence of any suspicious person. Checking and frisking have also been intensified at all entry points of the state. The alert was issued days after the Home Ministry announced that the security personnel would halt operations against militants in Jammu and Kashmir during the holy month of Ramzan. Friday morning, militants attacked a vehicle in which security forces were travelling in south Kashmir's Pulwama. The forces recovered three bags believed to be stuffed with improvised explosive devices or IEDs. Security forces found three bags containing suspected improvised explosive devices or IEDs in Pulwama. Last year too, the militants carried out a series of attacks in Kashmir on the Badr anniversary. All the attacks then were claimed by the group JeM. Meanwhile the centre's initiative of ceasefire in Jammu and Kashmir for a 30-day period of Ramzan seems to have no takers on the ground. Earlier this week, three soldiers were injured after militants triggered an IED, targeting an army mine-proof vehicle in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian district. A soldier was killed on Sunday after militants attacked an army camp at Kakpora in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district. In the cross-firing, a civilian was also killed. This was the first major attack on the army in Kashmir after the government announced unilateral ceasefire during the holy month of Ramzan. |
