Telangana police to launch helpline against corrupt cops; will J&K follow suit?
6/8/2018 11:43:25 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, June 8: As the Telangana police have asked local citizens and businessmen not to give bribes to any personnel in uniform and shared a phone number to lodge complaints in case anyone demanded the same, Jammu and Kashmir citizens crave for such measures in the state.
The move by the Telangana police came after a list of allegedly corrupt policemen began doing the rounds on social media. This list, which had a total of 391 names, was being confirmed and cross checked by Telangana DGP M Mahendar Reddy's office.
The move in the southern India has, meanwhile, touched the right chord, in the northern state of Jammu and Kashmir, where the citizens are desperately craving for a clean and untainted police and civil administration.
"Well done DGP Reddy. Let DGP Vaid ready himself for a similar task. J&K is more in need of it than Telangana," a Facebook user wrote in reaction to the Telangana DGP's announcement.
Another netizen said that many top cops of Jammu and Kashmir have allegedly amassed property worth crores during the peak of counterinsurgency period and "all need to be brought to the book."
"There are many top cops, especially from Kashmir Valley and now retired, who have land worth crores of rupees at prime positions in Srinagar, Jammu and Delhi. Their unbridled corruption was allowed in the name of national interest as these cops were projecting themselves as being at the forefront of anti-militancy operations in Kashmir," said an official from the Vigilance Organisation.
He added: "Wards of many of these former cops are studying outside the country and some in top Dehradun schools."
J&K notoriously figures among the top corrupt states of the country, and the main reason for this lack of accountability in the police and civil administration where culprits virtually enjoy a field day during their service.
