Humid conditions, absence of essentials make people awry about reopening of schools in Jammu division | Appeal higher ups to extend summer vacations | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, July 13: At a time when the residents of Jammu division are facing tremendous problems on account of humid conditions and absence of essential services the government decision to throw open the educational institutions on July 16 after the summer vacations has come in for sharp criticism. Talking to Early Times, a group of parents said that it would be difficult for them to send their wards to students given the humid and sultry conditions in the winter capital. They said that since there is scarcity of essentials of life such as water and power it is highly imprudent to throw open the schools on July 16. "We fail to understand the logic behind the issuance of this order as the Jammu division is passing through humid conditions. The day temperature might have come down but still then the humidity is very high during the day as well as night. The government should extend the vacations for couple of weeks so that there is respite for the students," said the parents. The parents said that it would be difficult for them to send their wards to the schools as the schedule of electricity is erratic and there is tremendous shortage of drinking water across the Jammu division. They said that government should first improve the scenario with regards to availability of power and water and then think about the re-opening of schools. "We are not against education of our children but same should not be imparted at the cost of their health. When basic things like water and electricity are not available to them at the schools we cannot be sure about their well being at their respective schools. The people at helm should look into this and then order for reopening of schools," said the parents. The parents said that according to the original order the schools were supposed to be closed up to July 28 adding that some mischief was done and the duration of vacations was cut down. They said that they fail to understand the logic and reason to cut down the vacations more so with the summer season yet to come to an end in the Jammu division. Director School Education Jammu, Rakesh Sarangal said that there is no proposal to extend the vacations as on date. He said that he is in Srinagar adding that he would talk to his higher ups with regards to the same. The parents have appealed the Governor's advisor Khurshid Ahmad Ganai to intervene in the matter and issue directions to the concerned authorities to extend the vacations. |
