Mehbooba, Abdullah have no faith in their MLAs | Political uncertainty in J&K | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 13: Former chief ministers of Jammu and Kashmir and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti and NC vice president Omar Abdullah are today the most worried politicians in Kashmir. Both are struggling to keep their flock together and both are threatening New Delhi advancing an almost an identical argument: Situation would dangerous proportions in case New Delhi encourages horse-trading or split their parties. Omar Abdullah had on occasions more than one after June 19 urged the authorities to dissolve the assembly so that the possibility of any horse-trading could be avoided. At the same time, he has suggested that situation in Kashmir was not conducive for undertaking an electoral exercise. "We have and will continue to demand dissolution of the state Legislative Assembly. NC believes this is necessary to end the ongoing phase of uncertainty and speculations that are adding to the sense of cynicism among the people," Omar Abdullah said as late as on July 11. He also added that the "present situation in the state was not conducive for the conduct of elections, the governor's administration should take all possible steps to restore normalcy and a sense of security among the people before a democratic exercise can take place". As for Mehbooba Mufti, she on Friday threatened that any move on the part of New Delhi to split her party would be fraught with dangerous consequences and could replicate 1987 in 2018. "You denied the people the right to exercise their franchise in 1987 and the result was the creation of Salahuddin and Yasin Malik. Things would be much worse of 1987 was replicated in the state," she today said while paying tributes to the so-called martyrs in Srinagar. The statements of both Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah only suggest one thing: They have no faith in their own legislators. Had they any faith in them, they would not have said what they said while threatening New Delhi. What has added to their worries is the statements made by some BJP leaders in Jammu and the statements made by PDP MLAs and MLCs like Abid Ansari, Imran Raza Ansari and Yaser Reshi. All the three PDP lawmakers have not relented. In fact, PDP MLC Reshi even after his removal from the post of president of Bandipora district reiterated his stand that he was not against his party and that he was only opposed to the dynastic politics in the party. As far as BJP is concerned, its leaders, including former Deputy Chief Minister, have claimed on a number of occasions that "many PDP, NC and Congress lawmakers are in touch with them" and that "the BJP could make a big announcement after the Amarnath Yatra is over". It would be only desirable if Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah keep their flocks together and not attack New Delhi. Any split in their respective outfit would only mean that they have no moral control over their party lawmakers. |
