Guv's admin to reassess threat perceptions to politicians | Ex-ministers to lose extra security | | Early Times Report
Jammu, July 14: Former ministers of the PDP-BJP coalition in the state are likely to lose their extra security covers as the Governor's administration is about to reassess the threat perception to politicians in the state. After the fall of coalition government in the state on June 19, former ministers and other senior leaders of the state continue to have a high level security cover. However, as a month is about to pass with no end to the political logjam, there are chances that the Governor's administration would reassess how much security does these former ministers need. There are reports suggesting that the administration is reviewing the security of political leaders and former ministers on categorisation basis and there will be no disparities between leaders belonging to the different political parties. It is being stated that the opposition as well as the former ruling party leader will have a similar security cover based on the intelligence input about the threat perception these leaders have. Reports have been making rounds that after an uprising broke out in Kashmir against the killing of Burhan Wani, thousands of political workers, most of them belonging to the PDP, had to flee their homes. They are presently living in guest houses and accommodation provided by the state government in Srinagar and elsewhere. In the last three years, many political workers of different mainstream political parties have been killed by suspected militants in Kashmir. These workers were described by them as "eyes and ears of the Indian state". In recent years, their lives have been turned upside down, particularly after the killing of Burhan Wani. In south Kashmir, these grassroots political workers have become easy targets for militants in recent years who appear in their homes late at night and make videos of them wherein they are seen begging for mercy from the militants and disassociating from their political activities. These videos later make their way to social media platforms such as Facebook where they serve as a warning for other people to keep away from mainstream political parties and their activities. At a time when the panchayat and municipal elections are being announced in the state, there is a dire need to provide security to those contesting polls in the militancy infested regions of Kashmir Valley, says a political activist based in central Kashmir. He added that the government has to put in place adequate security arrangements that could ensure that no militancy related activity mars the election atmosphere in the state. Meanwhile, what has hinted that there wouldn't be any government formation soon in the valley is the fact that the government is giving no special preference to the security of the former ministers. Furthermore, the state dispensation is likely to show no disparity in terms of political affiliations of the political leaders. |
