Abdullah, Mufti families under attack | Revolt in PDP has implications for NC too | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 14: Very significant political developments are unfolding in the Valley, particularly since June 19, when BJP in a dramatic manner expressed its no confidence in CM Mehbooba Mufti and snapped its ties with the PDP. Immediately after the collapse of the Mufti government, party politics within the PDP indicated that there could be a revolt against Mehbooba Mufti and the coterie (consisting of family members and yes men) surrounding her. And it happened sooner than later in a way that rattled Mehbooba Mufti and her uncles and aunts and brother and other members of the coterie. MLA after MLA and MLC after MLC (6 in number) trained their guns at Mehbooba Mufti, used very strong language against her, questioned her style of functioning and the manner in which she promoted the "family". One of the MLAs and prominent Shia leader and former minister Imran Raza Ansari went to the extent her calling Mehbooba Mufti "a white killer". To be more precise 5 MLAs and MLCs on Friday challenged her leadership in a press conference and claimed that "they are the real PDP party". They included Javaid Hussain Baig, nephew of PDP MP and former Deputy Chief Minister Muzaffar Hussain Baig, Imran Raza Ansari, Abdul Majid Paddar, Yasir Rishi and Saifuddin Bhat. Revolt by Javaid Hussain Baig was all the more significant because he doesn't do things without consulting Muzzaffar Hussain Baig. These revolting lawmakers from the PDP didn't just challenge the leadership of Mehbooba Mufti and pooh-poohed her claim that they had revolted at the behest of the Centre (in this case the ruling BJP), but also made it loud and clear that they were not just against Her but against the two families (Abdullah and Mufti), which had been dominating the Kashmir's political scene and corridors of powers since decades and this was not acceptable to the people of Kashmir. "We have adopted a democratic process to strength the PDP. We are the real PDP but we have stood up against two families (Muftis and Abdullahs),' said one of the revolting MLAs So, the PDP lawmakers challenged both the ruling families in unambiguous terms, thus suggesting that their target was not just Mufti but also the Abdullahs. And this open revolt against the Muftis and Abdullahs has all the potential of changing the Kashmir's political scenario. There are reasons to believe that some lawmakers from the NC could also adopt the line the revolting PDP lawmakers adopted. After all, the Abdullah family, like the Mufti family, has never trusted anyone outside the family and retained control over the real party positions, including the office of the party president. Ever since its inception in 1932, only the Abdullahs headed the party. The only exception was Sardar Budh Singh but he held the office of party president only for a brief stint. All in all, it can be said that the dynastic rule in the state is under challenge and it augurs well for the future. |
