Early Times Report

Kishtwar, July 14: In a major embarrassment for the authorities, a public darbar in Kishtwar area on Saturday proved a damp squib as only a handful of people turned up.
The Deputy Commissioner Kishtwar had ordered for holding a public darbar at Dool and had directed all the district and sector officers of the zone to attend the event. But the people who are at loggerheads with the administration over the issue of absorbing local youths in the under construction 1000 MW Pakal-Dool power project did not turn up at the event.
The people had threatened that in case the Deputy Commissioner Kishtwar and SP Kishtwar will participate in the public darbar, they will hold a protest against them. It forced the administration to cancel the darbar even as all arrangements were put in place.
Speaking to Early Times, the local people termed the holding of public darbar an eyewash. They said that DC Kishtwar alongwith SP Kishtwar left no stone unturned to suppress the voices of the people of the area demanding jobs in the Pakal-Dool power project at the cost of the land provided by them. The people allege that the police has been harassing the youths on the name of FIRs and Public Safety Act. They said that they will continue their protest till both the officers will be removed.
The people said the administration had made many promises with people of Dool and its adjoining areas at the time of acquiring of the land for construction of the power project. But the people who land was acquired are yet to receive compensation. The people alleged that even after more than 30 years, some land owners are yet to receive compensation for their land which was acquired for construction of 390 MW Dool-Hasti power project, the foundation of which was laid by former Prime Indira Gandhi in 1984. An elderly person said that they have learnt from the past mistakes and this time will not allow anyone to make them fool by making false and hollow promises. He said that if no employment will be given to the local unemployed youths, it will be better for the government to pack up the project without any further delay.
They also asked the company to display the list of those engaged so far in the project and the procedure followed in making these appointments.
"We are warning some self-styled leaders to stop acting as an agents of administration and AFCON company. We are watching them and will not allow such self-styled leaders to sabotage the peaceful movement of the local unemployed youths demanding jobs in power project" said the angry people sitting on peaceful protest for last several days.
