Rebel scare: Mehbooba avoids to hold party meeting | | | Early Times Report Jammu, July 15: Despite a group of rebels from within the party having openly raised voice against the "family raaj" in the Peoples Democratic Party, the PDP President and former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has been unable to call the much-needed meeting of the party leadership to decide future course of action. Sources said despite the apparent embarrassment, which the rebels headed by senior PDP leader Imran Reza Ansari have put the Muftis to, Mehbooba has been avoiding to call a meeting of her party leadership to initiate action against the rebel group. Sources said Mehbooba is unsure if all the party members would go by her word or they too would raise a voice of rebellion, something that may destabilize her party more. In the wake of rebellion by seven of her senior leaders, including Ansari and his uncle Abid Ansari apart from leaders like Yasir Reshi and Abbas Wani, the PDP was "bound to call" a meeting of the senior leadership do decide about the action to be initiated against the rebels. Such meetings were generally held at Mehbooba's Fairview residence. Source said infact a few days ago, when the rebellion against her started, PDP had planned to call a meeting. But given the "growing strength of the rebels", the PDP apprehends that calling senior leaders face to face may put the party to more of embarrassment as many more may swear alliance to Ansari. Imran Ansari who has emerged as the "kingmaker" in regional politics has already claimed to be enjoying support of the majority of MLAs from PDP. "Given the uncertainty about loyalty of her cadres, she (Mehbooba) doesn't want to further risk her position by calling a meeting, which can prove a shocker," said a PDP leader on the condition of anonymity. On July 13, Imran Ansari called a formal press conference to question Mebhooba's "legitimacy on being the head of the PDP." Ansari told reporters that the PDP belongs to him and not Mehbooba alone. Till the press conference, the rebellion was more of a covered move. But since then, the political pundits say the PDP looks unstable. Despite repeated attempts the former Chief Minister couldn't be contacted for comments. But her colleagues admitted that the holding of party meeting where all senior leaders would be invited was awaited. |
