JAMMU, July 15: The Bio-Medical Waste (BMW) incinerators for Government Medical College and Hospital, Chest and Diseases Hospital and Shri Maharaja Gulab Singh Hospital have been lying non-functional due to lack of vision.
Moreover, crores that were spent on purchase of BMW incinerators without the approval of the state pollution control board have gone waste.
Official sources divulged that the concerned authority of GMC Jammu had approved that incinerator without keeping demands of future in view. It is not working, they said adding the Bio-Medical Waste Management and Handling Rules 2016 which clearly mention that another incinerator cannot be installed within the periphery of 70 kilometers also stand violated . The authority, they said installed three incinerators within a radius of 2-3 kilometers.
Similarly, some concerned agencies, including authorities of CD and SMGS Hospitals had given approval to the executive body to install incinerators in the hospitals without taking mandatory permission from the State Pollution Control Board.
"After spending huge amount on both projects, the members of the Pollution Control Board had denied consent to run the incinerators as the same was not fulfilling the Bio-Medical Waste rules 2016," sources stated , adding that the amount of the taxpayers went down the drain owing to lack of vision.
Sources added that the incinerators at both hospitals have not been used even for a single day because the incinerators did not full criterion laid down by the PCB, which refused the permission to use them, sources told Early Times.
GMCH and its associated hospitals, District, Sub District and other health institutes have been dependent on a private player for treating biomedical waste of hospitals but no efforts were made to make the functional the existing facility.
