As overloading menace grips Udhampur's outskirts, lives of passengers at risk | | | Arun Jastroia
Early Times Report
UDHAMPUR, July 28: Overloading menace in Udhampur's outskirts has become a serious issue but the concerned departments have failed to take any strict action against those who are openly flouting the rules and regulations. Local said that over loading by mini buses is a common sight in outskirts of Udhampur. The mini bus operators are violating the traffic rules with impunity as they have made it a habit to accommodate more passengers than the sanctioned capacity. Some of the passengers could be seen hanging on back side of the mini buses while few others could be spotted sitting on the rooftops of the mini buses thereby giving an invitation to a major mishap. Though the Transport Department and Traffic Police make tall claims of fighting against the overloading menace in Udhampur district but in reality they prove out to be mere rhetoric and nothing else as the overloading is going on unabated. The rise in overloading clearly indicates that there is a nexus between the mini bus operators and the law enforcing agencies. Recent studies show that road accidents claimed more lives than militancy. Overloading is one of the factors which cause mishaps. There is an urgent need to check the menace of overloading with little bit of strictness and spreading awareness about its ills. |
